While using ski boot articles to is a good place to start your shoping, to get a feeling for the various features and funtions of the boots, the best way to buy a pair of boots is to go to a reliable ski shop with a well trained staff. Ask the Pros like patrollers and instructors where they buy their gear. With boots you want want to try on several, then buy the one that fits your foot most comfortably. The fit should be snug, but not constricting. A good general tip on fitting to start with is to get shell fitted. Pull the liner out of the boot, put your foot into the shell and slide your foot forward into the toe box, until you just touch the front of the toe box. Now you should have roughly 1 to 1-1/2 finger widths between your heel and the back of the heel pocket. More than this, down size to the next lower shell size. Less than this amount, go up to the next shell size. Again, buy what fits your feet comfortably, irregardless of what the skiing mags are saying you need to buy. And remember, with shaped skis, a stiffer forward flexion in the boots can do you more harm than good. Look for lateral stiffness, with a soft to medium forward flexion.
